Dr. Leigh Bennett, DMD, reviews the 2018 Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency CE program during Session 2. Provided by SCOPE Institute. Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency Sponsor includes Nierman Practice Management. The Dental Sleep Medicine Mini Residency is a 4-session, 64 CE Credit program designed to give dental practices the knowledge and guidance to fully incorporate obstructive sleep apnea treatment into their practice. Led by Dr. Mayoor Patel, DDS, MS, and Dr. Terry Bennett, DMD, D.ABCP, D.ABCDSM, the mini-residency includes a line-up of experienced specialists including sleep physicians and ENT's. With an emphasis on hands-on learning, attendees gain the skills and confidence needed to be successful. Dentists receive 2 sleep apnea appliances and go through the entire experience of the examination, impression and bite registrations, appliance delivery and fitting, and follow-up/calibration exams. The class also has the opportunity to shadow an AASM accredited sleep lab throughout the program. In between each session, dentists are given homework and assignments to complete, including literature to read, and cases to prepare. Team members are also given tasks to work on, such as communication scripts and physician outreach goals. By the end of session 4, the dental practice should be confidently treating obstructive sleep apnea patients, have physician referral networks in place, medical insurance reimbursement implemented, and be ready for various dental sleep medicine accreditation programs.
