Dr. Ann Trivette, DDS reviews the 2018 SCOPE Institute Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency CE program, sponsored by Nierman Practice Management. This 4-part, 64 CE credit program is a totally comprehensive educational experience for implementing dental sleep medicine into a dental practice. Taught by some of the most experienced educators in dental sleep medicine, Dr. Mayoor Patel, DDS, MS, and Dr. Terry Bennett, DMD, with an emphasis on hands-on and practical learning, dentists gain the practical skills and confidence needed to incorporate sleep apnea treatment into their practice successfully. In between each session, dentists are given assignments to complete, including literature to read, and cases to prepare. Team members are also given tasks to work on, such as communication scripts and physician outreach goals. Dentists receive 2 sleep apnea appliances and go through the entire experience of the examination, impression and bite registrations, appliance delivery and fitting, and follow-up/calibration exams. The class also has the opportunity to shadow an AASM accredited sleep lab throughout the program. By the end of session 4, the dental practice should be confidently treating obstructive sleep apnea patients, have physician referral networks in place, medical insurance reimbursement implemented, and be ready for various dental sleep medicine accreditation programs.
